When buyers source mature coconut for international shipment, one of the first decisions is whether to order fully husked or semi-husked coconut. Both have a place in the market, and choosing correctly can shave costs and reduce wastage at your processing plant.

Fully Husked Coconut

The outer fibrous husk is completely removed, exposing the brown shell. Weight per nut is 0.8 – 1.2 kg. Buyers prefer this format when:

  • Processing capacity is limited and the importer wants to skip dehusking labour
  • Shipping costs need to be optimised — less husk means lower per-tonne freight
  • Retail packaging is the end goal

Semi-Husked Coconut

A portion of the husk is retained, typically on top. This format:

  • Protects the shell during long ocean transit
  • Suits markets where the husk is reused for coir, charcoal, or biochar
  • Is preferred where local labour is cheaper than added container space

Quality Spec Both Formats Share

  • Mature kernels with high oil content
  • Light brown shell with no surface rot
  • Average weight of 0.8 – 1.2 kg per nut
